Rapid city airport directions8/25/2023 ![]() "Terminals tend to be an area where you have more local funding because certain areas of the terminal are ineligible for federal funding."ĭame explained that areas where passengers travel through the terminal building are typically eligible for federal funding, but areas "behind the scenes" like offices and baggage handling typically are not eligible for federal grants. "These are federally eligible projects, but as you get into terminals, they do have proration that come with them," Dame said. This demand is there."Īirport staff is projecting the expanded terminal may be completed within the next five to 10 years, and funding for the project would come from a mix of federal grants, state funding and the airport's capital fund. It's not a matter of if we build it, they will come. "You hate to say that you are behind on something, but again as we've been growing through this the demand is there. ![]() "We are progressing towards the terminal piece of the project. The estimated cost of the expansion would be between $20 million and $30 million, much of which would be paid for by grants from the Federal Aviation Administration.Īirport Executive Director Patrick Dame said the demand for more capacity in the airline terminal is already there, with the increased service Rapid City is seeing during the summer months. The plan calls for the terminal to be expanded with three additional gates, bringing the total to 10 gates and 11 aircraft parking places for the growth in commercial flights at the airport. 9-Plans to expand the commercial airline terminal and relocate the main runway at Rapid City Regional Airport took another step forward this week after the airport's board of directors voted to approve final directions for the 20-year master plan. (We're both of an age to remember those!) If you want to tour the Minuteman Missile Launch Control Facility, you'd have to get there early (depending on the time of year you are planning to visit) to get free, same-day tickets. It's small, but the film is worth seeing, if only for the portions about "duck and cover" drills. Note that the only dining opportunity inside the park is at the Cedar Pass Lodge dining room, but there are scenic places for picnic lunches in the park too.įinally, I suggest a stop at the NPS Minuteman Missile Site Visitor's Center just off I-90 at Exit 131 (where you will exit for the Northeast Entrance). Both exits lead to Wall where you can stop at Wall Drug for a dose of "kitsch" before continuing back to Rapid City. To exit the park, you can leave via the Pinnacles Exit or continue further down the gravel Sage Creek Rim Road and see another overlook and the Roberts Prairie Dog Town before exiting at Hwy 502. I would call these "walks", not "hikes" and you may enjoy doing one or more of them because they are rated Easy and the RT lengths are only 1/4 mile (Window), 1/2 mile (Cliff Shelf) and 3/4 mile (Door).Īfter the Visitor's Center, you can continue driving the Badlands Loop Road and stop at the various scenic outlooks. On the way to the visitor's center, you will pass the trailheads for the Window Trail, the Door Trail and, later, the Cliff Shelf Nature Trail. From the Northeast Entrance, you can drive to the Ben Reifel Visitor's Center to see the exhibits and get any information you want on the park from the rangers. The drive will take less than 90 minutes to drive to the Northeast Entrance where I suggest you begin your visit. This would be a fine day trip from Rapid City.
